Welcome to this unofficial guide to badges on untappd.
Before we begin, I am going to assume you know all about the app untappd and probably use it yourself. You also know all about beer, and probably have tried it yourself once or twice.
Badges on untapped can be controversial and drive odd behaviours. Untappd itself can also be controversial and arguably drive odd behaviours. However, we are going to put all of that aside and just concentrate on the positives of wonderful badges.
Badges can be divided into several categories: ones based on types of beer, ones based on venues, ones based on special events, and sponsored badges. For a full list, have a look here.
And if you are trying to level up your badges in a hurry, here are a few tips:
- Always add a venue to your check ins.
- Check in new beers on a Thursday.
- Take a photo with your beer.
- Add beers to your wishlist before you check them in.
- Retrospective badges is an option.
- British (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales) and Brazilian (South American) beers count towards two badges each, as do beers from Croatia, Greece (their own and the Balkan regional badge) and all of Central America (which also counts towards the South American badge).
- Some styles of beer can count towards four badges! Look for the following styles:
- Imperial/Double Black IPA (The Dark Side, Black as the Night, I Believe in IPA! and 2X)
- Double Milkshake IPA (2X, Haze for Days, I Believe in IPA! and Shake it Up!).
- Russian Imperial Stouts (Imperial Czar, Heavy Weight, Beyond a Shadow of a Stout, and 2X)
- Imperial Milk/Sweet Stout (So Udderly Sweet, Heavy Weight, Beyond a Shadow of a Stout, 2X)
- Imperial Oatmeal Stout (Oat of this World!, Beyond a Shadow of a Stout, Heavy Weight, 2X)
- Imperial / Double Coffee Porter (To The Port, Heavy Weight, 2X, Wake up and the Smell the Coffee!)
- Imperial / Double Coffee Stout (Beyond a Shadow of a Stout, Heavy Weight, 2X, Wake up and the Smell the Coffee!).
