Cream of the Crop

Cream Ales. Have 5 to unlock level one of the Cream of the Crop badge.

A Cream Ale is an American style of pale ale. They are usually light with no pronounced hop or malt tastes, a result of being lagered even though its a true ale. They often contain adjuncts such as rice or corn, but no cream!

My favourite example of the style is Kiwanda, from Oregon’s Pelican Brewing Company.

All American

The All American celebrates seven mainstream beers from three iconic American breweries. Have all 7 to claim the badge.

They include the three flagship beers of Budweiser (owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev), Coors Banquet and Miller Genuine Draft (both Molson Coors).

Plus the three lite versions: Bud Light, Coors Light and Miller Lite. These three also earn you the Lite Weight badge.

The final beer is a bit of a wildcard: the 6% Bud Light Platinum.

With all 7 beers checked in, you are surely now a true All American!

Cheers to Independent U. S. Craft Breweries

cheers

This sponsored badge was originally avaliable for 12 months from 20 September 2018 until the 20 September 2019. It has since been extended until 2021.

Paid for by the U.S. Brewers Association, check into a beer made by an independent American brewery to get it. 5 check ins gets you to level two, and then you level up every 5 after that, upto level 100.

The badge promotes the Association’s independent craft brewer seal, which was launched in 2017. This is avaliable to brewers who brew less than 6 million barrels a year and have no more than 25% of their brewery owned by a large, none craft company. To date over 4000 brewers display the seal, so there are plenty of beers to choose from for this badge.

Visit the Brewers Association’s site for a full list of breweries that qualify as independent.

American Craft Beer Week

For this badge, check-in to any beer from an independent American craft brewery between 13th May and 19th May.

That means any American beer produced by a brewery classified on Untappd as a Regional, Micro, or Nano Brewery, or a Brew Pub.

Sponsored by the Brewers Association (of America), this badge has been offered every year since 2011 to celebrate American Craft Beer Week. The Brewers Association also publish a list of breweries that qualify as independent.

Lite Weight

This is an American badge recognising the market domination of light lagers. Light in the American sense refers to low carb, rather than low alcohol.liteWeight_lg

This badge simply requires you to check in Bud light, Miller light and Coors light. Easy if you live in the States, tricky in most other places. Now you can move on to the All American badge

Land of the Free

Land of the Free is the country badge for the USA. Simply check in 5 beers made in America to receive it. Then five more for level 2, all the way to level 100 once you have had 500 US beers.landfree

The beer industry in the States is dominated by several big companies: Anheuser-Busch InBev (Budweiser, Bud light), Molson Coors (Coors, Miller) and Pabst. The Lite Weight and All American badges recognise this dominance.

Despite this, America is also really the “home”of craft beer with hoppy American pale ales launching the craft movement into what it is today. Pioneers of this movement include Sierra Nevada, Boston Beer Co (Samuel Adams), Lagunitas, Goose Island, Russian River, Dogfish Head, Modern Times and Oskar Blues.

Several of these companies have now been bought by the bigger players. This has resulted in an Independence movement by the remaining small players. Untappd has acknowledged this movement with the Cheers to Independent U.S. Craft Breweries badge.
