Support for Ukraine

Following Russia‘s unprovoked invasion into Ukraine, Untappd has released a new badge to show their support. It levels up after every beer all the way to level 100.

To earn it, check in any beer that has been brewed to add its support to the Ukrainians defence of their homeland. A full list can be found here. There are at least two beers already on the list simply called “Putin is a Dick”.

Brewers, including homebrewers, can get their brews added to the list by filling out this form.

Kvass RYEot

Kvass (or Kvas) is a “beer-like” fermented beverage that is made primarily from rye. It is low in alcohol and is often flavoured with local ingredients such as herbs or fruit.

Kvass is essentially the national drink of Russia (where is dominates cola) and is also popular in other Eastern European nations.

It’s easy to produce yourself at home with some Rye bread and yeast – here is a simple recipe.

Imperial Czar

Have 5 Russian Imperial Stouts to claim the Imperial Czar badge.

A style developed in the 1700s by British brewers, Russian Imperial Stouts were brewed for export and had a high ABV of 7% or more to last the trip. They were favoured by the court of the Russian Tsars, leading to the Imperial name.

The Russian market was closed in the 19th century and those same British brewers had to find other export markets, which directly led to the creation of the Indian Pale Ale.

The term Imperial has now become synonymous with strong beers and this is down to the popularity of the Russian Imperial Stout.

Tovarisch!

The country badge for Russia. Have 5 to get level 1.

Oddly beer was only classified as alcoholic in 2011. Before then anything under 10% was considered as just food.russia

Russia is associated with Russian Imperial Stouts, however that style originated in England and was designed to be shipped to Russia, rather than being a Russian invention.

The beer market in Russia is dominated by the Baltika brewery. It is second largest brewery in Europe, taking up more land than Vatican City, and is now owned by Carlsburg.
