St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day celebrates the patron Saint of Ireland. Check into any beer on 17 of March to claim the badge. If that happens to be a green beer, then even better!

Also look out for the Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Guinness which is a sponsored badge released each year

Paint the Town Red

Introduced in 2015, this is untappd’s badge for Amber and Red Ales.

Styles that count for this one include: American Amber/Red Ale, Amber/Red Lager, Irish Red Ale, Imperial/Double Red Ale, Other Red Ale or Red IPA.

This badge represents a bit of a mish mash of styles but the Irish Red Ale has a history dating back to 1710 and the start of the Smithwick Brewery. In general Red Ales are dark red in colour, and usually tend towards having smoother, less hoppy characteristics and even a caramel or toffee base flavour.

Of course, throw these expectations out the window when dealing with a American Red Ale or a Red IPA. While they may have a similar base, expect it to be just as well hopped as any APA or IPA.

Luck of the Irish

The country badge for Ireland. Check in 5 Irish beers to get this one, before leveling it after another 5 all the way to level 100.irish

It is fair to say Guinness dominates the market in Ireland, with Heineken (Murphy’s) and Magners cider also having large market shares.

A uniquely Irish style is the Irish Red Ale, with Kilkenny and Smithwicks (both owned by Guinness) being notable examples.

Beers from Northern Ireland also count towards this badge.
