Year in Beer

Spotify Untappd has released its Year in Beer feature for 2022. Happily for us, the release is promoted with a new badge. To claim it, check into any beer between 13 December and 13 January. That’s so easy, you probably already have it!

The release is accompanied by seven style specific badges that are sponsored by Oskar Blues and Cigar City. Check into any beer of that style to earn each badge. They styles are: IPA – American, Pale Ale – American, IPA – New England / Hazy, Wheat Beer – Hereweizen, Blonde Ale, Dark Ale and Hard Seltzer.

Super Style: IPA – Imperial / Double

Another of Untappd’s badges that are exclusive to paid subscribers, to earn this you need to be a paid member and check into any Imperial/Double IPA. Simple really, just reach for your wallet and you are halfway there!

This is the fifth of six paid badges that Untappd has said they will release in 2022.

Super Style: American IPA

Following Untappd’s refresh of its supporter programme and its rebrand as Insiders, Untappd has now released the first of a series of “Super Style” badges that are exclusive to members.

This badge is attainable if you are a member of the Insiders programme and you check into an American IPA style beer. Like a normal badge, it then levels up every 5 additional check ins you make.

Untappd has just followed this one up with an Imperial/Double Stout badge, with more expected to be on their way soon.

Shake it Up!

A subset of the Haze craze, have 5 Milkshake IPAs or Pale Ales to earn this badge. Then have 5 more, as it levels up all the way to 100.

These Ales are heavy on unfermentable sugars such as lactose and commonly flavoured with fruit and vanilla – creating a sweet and thick hazy pale ale.

In Lighter Times

The badge for India Pale Lagers. Have 5 IPLs for level 1.

Lighter

An IPL is a bit of a hybrid. Hoppy like an IPA but brewed with lager yeast at a cooler temperature, the result is a crisp lager with a big hoppy finish.

A relatively recent creation, consensus still hasn’t emerged on what defines the style. As a result some IPLs can be no more than a slightly hoppy lager while others are the wort of an IPA simply brewed with a different yeast.

IPA Day

Celebrated on the first Thursday of August each year, check into any IPA on the day to gain this badge.

Untappd recognises 20 different substyles of IPA, but remember APAs don’t count!IPA2018IPA2016

India Pale Ales get their name because they were brewed to be shipped to India by British brewers. First developed in the 18th century, they were brewed to be hoppier than standard pale ales so they would last the journey. They quickly found a market in Britain as well as being exported to the other corners of the British Empire.

In the 20th century American craft brewers took the style and turbo charged it, adding even more hops and kick starting the craft beer revolution.

Make sure you have an IPA to celebrate IPA day today!

Haze for Days

With hazy IPAs being very much the flavour of the month, it’s no surprise that untappd have jumped on board with this badge. They are known by a variety of names, such as East Coast IPA’s, New England IPA’s, or even Vermont-style IPA’s. Whatever you call it, these hazy, juicy creations are definitely making a big impact right now. haze

The badge was introduced in November 2018 and Originally had four styles that count towards this one: New England IPAs, New England Imperial/Double IPAs, New England Pale Ales and Milkshake IPAs.

Three other styles have recently been added to this badge: Milkshake Pale Ales, Double/Imperial Milkshake IPAs and Triple New England IPAs. Milkshake beers have their own badge as well, so they count for both!
