Above the Clouds

Become part of Untappd’s “Mile High Club”. No, it’s not the same as that other one.

Above the Clouds was conceived as a venue badge for aboard planes. The intent was to check in from a WiFi enabled airplane and list your venue as one categorised as Plane/In-flight.

Unfortunately, WiFi wasn’t as widespread on planes as it is now and the administrators started manually awarding the badge based on photos of beer taken on board planes. This created a lot of work and the badge was eventually withdrawn.

That’s the last entry from our week looking at defunct badges. Normal service resumes next week!

Frat Party

“Where’s the party at bro? That’s at least three cheap beers that college kids love and can afford.”

This was essentially a version of Lite Weight but for cheap American lager. To earn it you needed to check in Natural Light (Anheuser-Busch InBev), Keystone Ice (Molson Coors) and a Pabst Blue Ribbon, all at venues with a primary category of Other – College & Education.

The badge was retired in 2015, because it was both too American centric and also it kind of promoted underage drinking (as the drinking age is 21 in the USA).

Craft Brewer

Another defunct badge, to gain Craft Brewer you had to add 25 beers to the untappd database. This was originally designed to be a follow on from Home Brewer (for adding 10 beers) and be followed up by another badge for adding 100 beers, Brew Master.

Unfortunately, instead of rewarding home brewers these badges instead incentivised users to add duplicate entries to the database. To stop this onslaught of beers such as Bud-Light and BuD LiGhT, the two badges were retired.
