Buena Onda: Breweries from Argentina

This one is for beers brewed in Argentina. Check in five different ones to claim the badge! As a bonus, they all will also count for Amazons & Andes as well.

Argentina has always had somewhat of a German influence, and this is definitely true in the brewing scene. AB InBev dominate the market however, with local brand Quilmes as well as international brands such as Budweiser, Corona and Stella. It’s main rival is Compañía de las Cervecerías Unidas, which imports Heinekin as well as its local Schneider brand.

Quilmes was founded in 1888 by a German immigrant and has dominated since the early 1900’s. It was bought by Ambev in 2002 which helped AB InBev establish itself as the major player in Argentina.

अच्छी सेहत के लिए: Breweries from India

This is the country badge for India, the most populous country in the world. To get it, check into five beers made by Indian breweries.

The most famous of these has got to be Kingfisher, which is owned by United Breweries. Other major brewers in India include international heavyweights SABMiller, Carlsburg  and Anheuser-Busch Inbev. Other local companies include Mohan Meakin and Bira 91.

Lion beer, which was first brewed in the 1820’s, was Asia’s first beer brand. While it is still produced, it is no longer a market leader and has only a small distribution range.

While India is not exactly a hotspot for beer, it does lend its name to one of the most famous styles of them all, Indian Pale Ale. IPA’s were originally brewed in Britain to survive the long trip over the sea to India, which was a British colony at the time.

Frat Party

“Where’s the party at bro? That’s at least three cheap beers that college kids love and can afford.”

This was essentially a version of Lite Weight but for cheap American lager. To earn it you needed to check in Natural Light (Anheuser-Busch InBev), Keystone Ice (Molson Coors) and a Pabst Blue Ribbon, all at venues with a primary category of Other – College & Education.

The badge was retired in 2015, because it was both too American centric and also it kind of promoted underage drinking (as the drinking age is 21 in the USA).

In With the Old, In With the New

This is the badge for Gueuze (or Geuze) beers. Have five to claim the badge.

A style of Lambic, this Belgian style is typically made by blending a young (roughly 1 year old) Lambic with an older Lambic (2 to 3 years old). The mix is then bottled and further fermentation occurs to create the Gueuze.

A resulting mix is dry and sour. Traditionally served in champagne style bottles, the term is now protected by the EU (as is Lambic). Notable producers include Boom, Lindemans, Belle-Vue (owned by Anheuser–Busch InBev) and Timmermans.

The Great White North

The country badge for Canada. Have 5 Canadian beers to get level 1 of The Great White North. Of course it goes up a level after every additional 5 until it reaches level 100.

Canada’s three largest beer producers are Labatt, Molson and Sleeman. Labatt is know for its Labatt Blue branded lager and is owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev. Molson is one half of the Molson Coors conglomerate while Sleeman is owned by Sapporo. Sapporo also own Unibroue who are a Quebec based brewery that specialises in Belgian styles.

The largest Canadian owned brewer remaining is Moosehead, who have about 4 percent of the total market. Craft breweries occupy roughly 10 percent of the market that is very much dominated by multinational lagers.

Suds Samba

The country badge for Brazil. Have 5 Brazilian beers to claim level 1 of the Suds Samba badge.

Brazil is known for a number of mass produced lagers. Beers such as Skol, Brahma and Bohemia. The world’s third largest beer market, it is dominated by AmBev who are a key part of the Anheuser-Busch InBev conglomerate.

While now it is mainly known as a Brazilian beer, Skol was originally conceived of as an international brand that could be licensed worldwide. The brand was set up in 1964 by four breweries: Allied Breweries (UK), Labatt (Canada), Pripps-Bryggerierna (Sweden), and Unibra (Belgium). AmBev produce it in Brazil today while Carlsburg now owes the European license and Unibra still operates in Africa.

So Udderly Sweet

Untappd’s badge for Milk Stouts, have 5 of them to earn level 1 of this badge.

Milk Stouts have lactose added to them during brewing to make them slightly sweet. Lactose is a milk sugar and, unlike normal sugars, it doesn’t break down during the brewing process.

The oldest Milk Stout still in existence is probably Mackeson Stout, which is now produced by Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Going on Safari

One of only two continent badges on Untappd, have 5 beers brewed anywhere in Africa to claim Going on Safari.

Africa is not exactly known for its beer, but it is home to South Africa Breweries which was the SAB in SABMiller until it was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2016.

With its flagship Castle lager, Hansa and Carling Black brands, SAB also has a strong presence in neighbouring countries, such as Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Most countries have their own national brewery with a flagship lager, such as Namibia Breweries’ Windhoek, Nigerian Breweries’ Star Lager (Heineken) and Al Ahram Breweries’ Stella (also Heineken).

The full list of qualifying countries (as of 6 November 2019) is: Egypt, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Togo, Botswana, Cameroon, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Malawi, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Sudan, Uganda, Tunisia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania, Liberia, Senegal, Mali, Angola, Burundi, Madagascar, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Benin, Chad, Guinea, São Tomé and Príncipe, Lesotho, Seychelles, Central African Republic, Libya, and the Republic of Congo.

Gluten-Free

Have 5 beers listed as Gluten-Free on untappd to gain this simply named badge.GE

Gluten-Free diets have been trending for a while now and the beer industry has caught on. For an industry where malted Barley is a main ingredient this can be quite a challenge!

While Untappd recognises Gluten-Free as a beer style all on its own, beers that are Gluten-Free can range from complex ales to IPAs to light lagers.

A brewery that specialises in this is Omission. Owned by the “Craft Brew Alliance” of Redhook Ale brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Anheuser-Busch InBev, all of Omission’s brews are Gluten-Free.

Budmo

Have 5 beers from the Ukraine to gain the Budmo badge. Of course, it levels every 5 all the way to level 100.

Three companies dominate the Ukrainian market, locally owned Obolon, Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Chernihivske and Carlsburg’s Lvivske.

Lagers and Pilsners dominate the market and the cost of beer is cheap, about $1 USD per 500ml.
