The Croats

The country badge for Croatia. Have 5 Croatian beers to earn this one. Of course, it keeps levelling until you reach level 100 after 500 beers.

The market is dominated by two lagers, Ožujsko (owned by Molson Coors) and Karlovačko (Heineken), however craft breweries are beginning to flourish. In particular, look out for The Garden Brewery from Zagreb who are excellent.

Croatian beers also count towards the Balkans regional badge, so you really get some bang for your buck here!

Zwickel City

Untappd’s badge for Kellerbier and Zwickelbier. Have 5 to claim level one.

A Kellerbier is a fresh Helles. Being young it has more malt and hop characteristics than your usual Helles. Kellerbiers are unpasteurised and are cloudy due to the yeast used. Zwickelbiers are a variant of Kellerbiers and were originally siphoned from the main batch with a special tool.

The badge was introduced in November 2018.

Beer-giving

The fourth Thursday of November is kind of a big deal in America. Thanksgiving is really the national holiday, bigger than Christmas or Independence day. Check in any beer on the day to celebrate with the Beer-giving badge.

Thanksgiving celebrates the end of the harvest was first celebrated in 1621 by the pilgrims who founded the USA. It was proclaimed a federal holiday in 1863 and has been celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November since 1942.

This year it falls on the 28 November, so be sure to check in a beer and claim the badge.

Small But Not Forgotten

Introduced in June 2018, this badge celebrates 13 of the smallest countries and territories in Europe. Have five beers brewed in these micro-nations to claim the badge.

The countries/territories included are Andorra, the Channel Islands, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Greenland, Isle of Man, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, Cyprus, San Marino, Luxembourg and the Åland Islands.

Above the Clouds

Become part of Untappd’s “Mile High Club”. No, it’s not the same as that other one.

Above the Clouds was conceived as a venue badge for aboard planes. The intent was to check in from a WiFi enabled airplane and list your venue as one categorised as Plane/In-flight.

Unfortunately, WiFi wasn’t as widespread on planes as it is now and the administrators started manually awarding the badge based on photos of beer taken on board planes. This created a lot of work and the badge was eventually withdrawn.

That’s the last entry from our week looking at defunct badges. Normal service resumes next week!
