To celebrate Untappd’s version of the Kentucky Derby, they have also released a new badge. It is available from 29 April until 1 May, the date of the running of the actual Derby.
To get it, you simply need to check into a beer from one of the following styles: Farmhouse Ale – Saison, Pale Ale, Stout, Sour, Lager, Belgian, Pilsner, Porter or Wheat.
The badge for Pilsners. Have 5 to earn this badge.
Pilsners are named after the Czech town of Plzen, which is where the style started. This is where the lager yeast and storage techniques were first combined with pale ale techniques to create the style of golden lager that is today widespread.
Technically pilsner is a type of lager, however for Untappd’s purposes they are two separate styles. Therefore many beers that could claim to be pilsners are instead categorised as “Lager – Euro” or another variation of lager.
Famous brands that are recognised as pilsners include the original, Pilsner Urquell (now owned by Asahi), and its state-owned rival Budweiser Budvar, as well as Becks (Anheuser-Busch InBev), Groschl (Asahi again) and Tuborg (Carlsburg).
Untappd recognises six styles of pilsner: Czech / Bohemian, German, Italian, New Zealand, Imperial/Double, and Other.
The country badge for Czechia, check in 5 beers brewed in the Czech Republic to claim this badge. It levels up to 100.
Czechia includes the cities of Prague, the capital, Brno and Pilsen, which is where the style of pilsner was invented.
Unsurprisingly, the main beers in Czechia are all pilsners: Budweiser Budvar (the original Budweiser from the city of Budweis), Staropramen (owned by Molson Coors) and the original Pilsner Urquell (owned by Asahi).
