Year in Beer

Spotify Untappd has released its Year in Beer feature for 2022. Happily for us, the release is promoted with a new badge. To claim it, check into any beer between 13 December and 13 January. That’s so easy, you probably already have it!

The release is accompanied by seven style specific badges that are sponsored by Oskar Blues and Cigar City. Check into any beer of that style to earn each badge. They styles are: IPA – American, Pale Ale – American, IPA – New England / Hazy, Wheat Beer – Hereweizen, Blonde Ale, Dark Ale and Hard Seltzer.

Untappd Derby

To celebrate Untappd’s version of the Kentucky Derby, they have also released a new badge. It is available from 29 April until 1 May, the date of the running of the actual Derby.

To get it, you simply need to check into a beer from one of the following styles: Farmhouse Ale – Saison, Pale Ale, Stout, Sour, Lager, Belgian, Pilsner, Porter or Wheat.

Pale as the Moon

Pale Ales are in some ways the foundation of the craft beer movement. To earn this badge simply check in 5 Pale Ales. It levels up to 100 so you don’t have to stop after 5.

pale

Pale Ales can be as varied as the classic Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, an America hoppy style ale, to the very Belgian Pauwel Kwak served in it’s traditional test tube style glass.

Untappd recognises the following styles of Pale Ale that all count towards the badge: American, Australian, Belgian, English, Other, Milkshake, New England, New Zealand, XPA (Extra Pale) and American Pale Wheat. Non-Alcoholic Beer – Pale Ale’s are also included.

I Believe in IPA!

This one shouldn’t be too much of a challenge: five IPA beers of any of the various styles. The badge goes up to level 100, that’s 500 IPAs so get going.

ipa

There are 26 styles of IPA that currently recognised by untappd: American, Belgian, Black/Cascadian Dark Ale, Brett, Brown, Brut, Cold, English, Farmhouse, Fruited, Imperial/Double, Imperial/Double Black, Imperial/Double Milkshake, Imperial/Double New England, Other, Milkshake, New England, Non-Alcoholic, Quadruple, Red, Rye, Session/India Session Ale, Sour, Triple, Triple New England and White / Wheat. Note APAs don’t count as they are classed as Pale Ales.

There are also separate badges for Black, Hazy, Milkshake, Session and Triple IPAs.

Originally the badge was introduced in 2011 as a collaboration with another website and was limited to only five specific IPAs: Dogfish Head’s 60 Minute IPA, Bell’s Two Hearted IPA, the New Belgium Ranger IPA, Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo Extra IPA and the Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA. A pretty good starting point if you ask me!
