Spring 2020 Style update

It’s not as exciting as a new badge but Untappd has released its style updates for Spring. Let’s have a look at the changes and how they affect the badges.

Bière de Garde and Bière de Mars are both now recognised as Farmhouse Ales and count towards the Trip to the Farm badge as well as their own Beer for Keeping badge.

Graff is now listed as “Cider – Graff” and counts towards the Johnny Appleseed badge.

There have also been 11 new styles added:

With all of the new styles, the Wheel of Styles badge can now reach level 43.

And one other minor updates that happened in April: Honey beer now counts towards the Hey Honey badge.

All Together

An open source beer that is being brewed by a number of different breweries around the world to support the hospitality industry, check into any version of the beer before 8 June 2020 to claim the badge. (Update: now extended until 8 August 2020)

The initiative started with the Other Half Brewing Co in New York, who came up with the recipe for this Hazy IPA. Currently 749 breweries in 51 countries are producing the brew, so chances are you can get your hands on one.

You Don’t Know Brett!

Introduced in December 2019, have 5 American Wild Ales, Brett IPA’s, Wild Ales – Other or Brett Beers to claim this badge.

Brett stands for Brettanomyces, a type of wild yeast that can infect fermenting beer – usually its unwanted but for these beers it’s a deliberate, or at least encouraged, addition.

They share some similarities with traditional Belgian styles like Lambics and Flanders Oud Bruins, so can be seen as a modern craft twist on these styles.

One of the weirdest Wild Ale brews has to be Beard Beer by Rogue Ales. The beer was fermented using yeast harvested from the head brewers beard!

Shake it Up!

A subset of the Haze craze, have 5 Milkshake IPAs or Pale Ales to earn this badge. Then have 5 more, as it levels up all the way to 100.

These Ales are heavy on unfermentable sugars such as lactose and commonly flavoured with fruit and vanilla – creating a sweet and thick hazy pale ale.

Beyond a Shadow of a Stout

Introduced in December 2019, Untappd finally has a badge for Stouts. Simply have 5 Stouts to claim the badge. It levels upto level 100.

Stouts are the dominant style of dark beer and traditionally focus on the malt over the hops. They are celebrated every November on International Stout Day.

Five sub-styles of Stout currently have their own badges as well: Oatmeal Stouts, Milk Stouts, Coffee Stouts, Pastry Stouts and Russian Imperial Stouts. All Stouts also count towards the Heavy Weight badge. In addition, Non-Alcoholic Beer – Porter / Stout count towards the Low Gravity badge.

Zwickel City

Untappd’s badge for Kellerbier and Zwickelbier. Have 5 to claim level one.

A Kellerbier is a fresh Helles. Being young it has more malt and hop characteristics than your usual Helles. Kellerbiers are unpasteurised and are cloudy due to the yeast used. Zwickelbiers are a variant of Kellerbiers and were originally siphoned from the main batch with a special tool.

The badge was introduced in November 2018.

Set the Table

Untappd’s badge for Table beer. Have 5 to claim the badge. Have 5 more to reach level 2 and then keep going until you hit level 100.

From the June 2019 update, table beer is a low percentage or “small beer” that is usually 3% or less. It follows a tradition that dates back to the middle ages when water was unsafe to drink and so low alcohol beer was favoured with meals.

In With the Old, In With the New

This is the badge for Gueuze (or Geuze) beers. Have five to claim the badge.

A style of Lambic, this Belgian style is typically made by blending a young (roughly 1 year old) Lambic with an older Lambic (2 to 3 years old). The mix is then bottled and further fermentation occurs to create the Gueuze.

A resulting mix is dry and sour. Traditionally served in champagne style bottles, the term is now protected by the EU (as is Lambic). Notable producers include Boom, Lindemans, Belle-Vue (owned by Anheuser–Busch InBev) and Timmermans.
