IPA Day

Celebrated on the first Thursday of August each year, check into any IPA on the day to gain this badge.

Untappd recognises 20 different substyles of IPA, but remember APAs don’t count!IPA2018IPA2016

India Pale Ales get their name because they were brewed to be shipped to India by British brewers. First developed in the 18th century, they were brewed to be hoppier than standard pale ales so they would last the journey. They quickly found a market in Britain as well as being exported to the other corners of the British Empire.

In the 20th century American craft brewers took the style and turbo charged it, adding even more hops and kick starting the craft beer revolution.

Make sure you have an IPA to celebrate IPA day today!

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest, the world’s biggest beer festival! Oktoberfest is held in Munich and each year around 8 million litres of beer is served to the six million people who attend the festival.

Six breweries take part in the festival: Augustiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr (who is owned by Paulaner), Hofbrau, Löwenbräu (owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev) and Spatenbräu (also Anheuser-Busch InBev).

However, despite the name, this badge is not about the festival, it’s about the beer. Marzen (or Fiestbier) is the beer served at Oktoberfest. Have 5 beers of this style to get the badge.

Traditionally brewed in March (hence the name), these slightly stronger beers with a bready or biscuity malt background. They were designed to last all winter, when brewing was impractical. Any remaining at the end of winter was finished off at the start of spring, at Oktoberfest.

Cheers to Independent U. S. Craft Breweries

cheers

This sponsored badge was originally avaliable for 12 months from 20 September 2018 until the 20 September 2019. It has since been extended until 2021.

Paid for by the U.S. Brewers Association, check into a beer made by an independent American brewery to get it. 5 check ins gets you to level two, and then you level up every 5 after that, upto level 100.

The badge promotes the Association’s independent craft brewer seal, which was launched in 2017. This is avaliable to brewers who brew less than 6 million barrels a year and have no more than 25% of their brewery owned by a large, none craft company. To date over 4000 brewers display the seal, so there are plenty of beers to choose from for this badge.

Visit the Brewers Association’s site for a full list of breweries that qualify as independent.
