Year in Beer

Spotify Untappd has released its Year in Beer feature for 2022. Happily for us, the release is promoted with a new badge. To claim it, check into any beer between 13 December and 13 January. That’s so easy, you probably already have it!

The release is accompanied by seven style specific badges that are sponsored by Oskar Blues and Cigar City. Check into any beer of that style to earn each badge. They styles are: IPA – American, Pale Ale – American, IPA – New England / Hazy, Wheat Beer – Hereweizen, Blonde Ale, Dark Ale and Hard Seltzer.

Wit, Weiss, and Weizen

New for October 2021, this is a badge for all wheat beer styles. So simply check into five different beers that are part of the “wheat” parent style to claim the badge.

The styles include Wheat Beer – American Pale Wheat, Wheat Beer – Dunkelweizen, Wheat Beer – Other, Wheat Beer – Hefeweizen, Wheat Beer – Hefeweizen Light / Leicht, Wheat Beer – Hopfenweisse, Wheat Beer – Kristallweizen, Wheat Beer – Wheat Wine, Wheat Beer – Witbier / Blanche and the newly added Non-Alcoholic Beer – Wheat Beer.

Hefeweizen’s and Light Hefeweizen’s also have their own badge, the Heffenista, while Kristallweizen’s have Crystal is King, Dunkelweizen’s have Take A Dunk! and Witbier’s also count towards the Keep Your Wits About You badge, so they are all great places to start. As well as Non-Alcoholic Wheat beers counting towards Low Gravity, if that’s more your style.

Ich Bin Ein Berliner

Berlin is Europe’s second biggest city, so it’s no surprise that it would have its own style of beer: the Berliner Weisse. Have 5 of them to get this badge.Berliner

Called the ‘Champagne of the North’ by Napoleon, a good Weisse is crisp, cloudy and tart. They are not strong in alcohol and are a perfect refreshing beverage.

The style was once the dominant style in Berlin until it started to fade away in the second half of the 20th century. Now revived by the craft revolution, many craft breweries are experimenting with adding fruit to the style which has led to its own style on Untappd, the Fruited Berliner Weisse.

Keep Your Wits About You

This badge is for Witbiers. Have 5 to gain level 1.

A traditional Belgian style that literally means wheat beer, they are usually spiced by coriander and orange peel.

The style had fallen into obscurity until it was very successfully revived in the 1960s with Hoegaarden (now owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev). Another well known Witbeer is the American Blue Moon Belgian White (Molson Coors).

Heffenista

Check into 5 hefeweizens to receive the Heffenista badge. Hefeweizen light/leicht beers and Hopfenweisse’s also count.

A hefeweizen is a German wheat beer that is usually cloudy. The name means “yeast wheat” in German and refers to the beer being bottle conditioned and therefore containing some sediment.

Most German breweries produce a very decent hefeweizen but the most famous might be the two made by Erdinger and Paulaner.
