Magical History Tour

Magical History Tour was added in September 2024 and is Untappd’s badge for Historical Beers. To claim it check in five different “historical beers”.

Untappd’s “historical beers” cover a wide range, they currently include:

As you can see, quite an eclectic grouping!

Celebrate Oktoberfest

An evolution of last year’s Oktoberfest (2021) badge, it can be earned by checking into any beer that is a Festbier or Märzen between 17 September and 3 October.

The badge of course celebrates Oktoberfest, one of the oldest and biggest beer festivals in the world. Held every September, each year around 8 million litres of beer is served to the six million people who attend the festival. There are six traditional Munich breweries that take part in the festival, and each brews stronger beers that have been prepared all winter, ready for the Spring celebrations.

Oktoberfest (2021)

Not to be confused with the normal Oktoberfest badge, this one specifically celebrates the 2021 festival.

To earn it, check into any beer brewed by one of the original Munich breweries between 18 September and 3 October 2021. The five breweries are: Paulaner Brauerei, Spaten-Franziskaner-Löwenbräu-Gruppe, Staatliches Hofbräuhaus München, Augustiner-Bräu München, and Hacker-Pschorr.

From the Cold

A badge to celebrate both traditional Eisbock’s and other Freeze-Distilled beers. Have 5 to claim the badge.

Eisbocks, which also count towards I’ll Be Bock, are a strong German brew that is made by slowly bringing a Doppelbock down to freezing and removing the ice as it forms on top. This reduces the water content, intensifying the flavour and strength.

The category of Freeze-Distilled beer is a catch all that covers any other style of beer that is made the same way. In theory any beer could be freeze distilled to intensify the flavours, however the process also intensifies faults which might otherwise be undetectable.

Zwickel City

Untappd’s badge for Kellerbier and Zwickelbier. Have 5 to claim level one.

A Kellerbier is a fresh Helles. Being young it has more malt and hop characteristics than your usual Helles. Kellerbiers are unpasteurised and are cloudy due to the yeast used. Zwickelbiers are a variant of Kellerbiers and were originally siphoned from the main batch with a special tool.

The badge was introduced in November 2018.

To The Alt

German for Old Beer, the style of Altbier is associated with the town of Düsseldorf. Track down 5 of them to earn this badge.

A top fermenting lager, it is an old style that is a darker colour than most lagers, with fruitier notes. However it is cleaner and crisper than an ale due to the largering.

There is a friendly rivalry between Altbier drinkers and drinkers of Kölsch, which comes from Düsseldorf’s neighbouring city of Cologne.

Down In Smoke

Check into 5 “Smoked beers” for this one. It levels to level 100, so go crazy.

As well as generic smoked beers, Untappd also counts Grätzer/Grodziskie’s, Leichtenhainer’s and Rauchbier’s towards the badge.

The Grätzer (or Grodziskie) is a Polish beer that is highly carbonated and has low bitterness and alcohol. This allows the smoky characteristics to really shine through.

A Leichtenhainer is a German sour ale that is lightly hopped and smoked. The end product is usually hazy and is designed to be drunk fresh, traditionally straight from the barrel.

A Rauchbier is another German style, and it literally translates to “smoked beer”. The barley is dried over an open flame, which imparts the distinctive smokey aroma and taste.
