Super Style: IPA-Imperial/ Double New England

The final of Untappd’s six badges that are exclusive to paid subscribers. To earn this one you need to be a paid member and check into any Imperial/Double New England IPA.

Following on from the Super Style badges for New England IPA’s and Imperial/Double IPA’s, this is a natural conclusion to the 2022 series of six paid badges.

The Wine of Beers

Have 5 Barleywines to earn The Wine of Beers badge. Untappd recognises three styles of Barleywine: American, English and Other, and Rye Wine and Wheat wine also count towards this badge.

A Barleywine is a strong ale of at least 6%, and usually more. They are rather sweet, due to the amount of malt added to achieve the desired ABV. Some beer critics consider them to be indistinguishable from Old Ales.

And no, despite the name, Barleywines are not a wine and contain no grapes.

Imperial Czar

Have 5 Russian Imperial Stouts to claim the Imperial Czar badge.

A style developed in the 1700s by British brewers, Russian Imperial Stouts were brewed for export and had a high ABV of 7% or more to last the trip. They were favoured by the court of the Russian Tsars, leading to the Imperial name.

The Russian market was closed in the 19th century and those same British brewers had to find other export markets, which directly led to the creation of the Indian Pale Ale.

The term Imperial has now become synonymous with strong beers and this is down to the popularity of the Russian Imperial Stout.

Riding Steady

Riding Steady should be a fairly simple badge to get. For this one, check into 5 beers with an ABV lower than 5%.

ABV stands for Alcohol by Volume and measures how much alcohol is in the beer. Not all beers on Untappd list their ABV so make sure yours does so it counts towards the badge.Steady
